Console shenanigans

So the other week my trusty Xbox One - bought on-release in 2013 - decided it’s going to stubbornly beep-on-beep-off and not actually turn on.

I’ve tried the various online ideas - press this, unplug that, hold down these three far-apart things while standing on one leg and singing “The Hedgehog Can Never Be…” - you get the idea. Still nothing. At this point I’m kind of resigned to taking it to be fixed by someone who knows what they’re doing.

Today I decided I was going to play on the PS4 which has been patiently sitting there, unused, for some months. Pressed the button on the front. Three quick beeps. No sign of life.

My first thought was “not you too”. Was there a power spike? Did I do something stupid, have I offended the console gods… Second, slightly more rational thought - look more closely at the button I’m pushing.

It’s the eject button.

Yes. The three beeps was the console saying “there’s no disc in me”. When I pressed the actual power button it joyfully sprang to life. (And promptly wanted to update, because PlayStation.)

So I guess what I’m fumbling towards is - don’t assume the worst just because something has already happened.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go play Icewind Dale.
